Do Blacks Avoid Serious Subjects
This topic caused quite a stir on another forum. I want to find out what people thought about that subject here. You can check out the other discussion via a link at the bottom of the page.
Are we as a people hooked on entertainment to our own peril? Comedies, lite dramas and music seem to dominate our culture. Many of our entertainers are looked upon as leaders versus the white culture many entertainers are looked as outside the mainstream in terms of lifestyle and politics. Books with sex and scandal are our bestselling literature. Serious subjects like politics, economics, history and the like involving our people seem to be missing in our everyday discussions. The few mainstream television media outlets that focus on the black community are heavily laden with music videos. Even with a black President, we have a scarce number of voices on the mainstream networks and cable political news programs. A sure way for a black movie to fail is for it to be about something historical. Maybe we just want to escape a dreary day-to-day existence. My contention is we may be laughing, watching videos and singing as the bottom is falling out from under us as it did when the economy collapsed. Now we are the hardest hit and want the President to do something targeted to our problems. Maybe my perception is off the mark, but I feel like we are missing something and being bypassed by other groups that have a shorter history here than we do. Is there anything to what I'm thinking or are we just fine?
